R.O.C. Race
R.O.C. Race

Summary
Mowalla was hired by Vavi Sport and Social of San Diego, California to assist in the production and event management of the first annual ROC Race and Fest held Saturday, May 22, 2011 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Taking the challenges of a military obstacle course and combining them with competitive, game show antics of ABC’s Wipeout, ROC Race could only be described by its creators and participants with one word: Ridiculous.
Load In
If you have to load in an outdoor event, there is no better place to do it than in Southern California. Team Mowalla certainly enjoyed the chance to work outdoors in this beautiful place. The biggest challenges for the load in process were the coordination of many event vendors to work in perfect harmony, and the sheer size of the venue. Over 19 obstacles complete with a post-race festival village were created in a matter of days, all without damaging North County’s premier horse racing destination, The Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Line Up
ROC fest featured over 19 zany obstacles on a three mile course where participates could expect only the ridiculous, like being beaten with foam bananas by men in monkey costumes. Post race, The ROC Fest served up SoCal’s best DJ talent from Sleeping Giant Records along with delicious brewskis and food for spectators and participants.
Run of Show
Individual runners and teams were treated to three miles of insanity, courtesy of the minds at Vavi Sport and Social. The race crowd was a mixture of the very athletic to the very keg-letic, some sporting wildly creative costumes. Highlights from the course included the Snow Mountain, a 20FT wide mountain of slush meant to test runners’ agility. A special shout out must be sent to the dude with the helmet cam, our favorite participant: The way you doubled back through the strobe obstacle and filmed yourself coming back through showed real dedication and completely impressed us! Overall, participants displayed a high level of sportsmanship resulting in minimal injuries and one ridiculous, good time.
Reviews
Usually, we don’t toot our own horn with two quotes about one event…Oh whatever, here it goes:
“The only thing better than Mowalla’s production chops is Brent’s taste in sunglasses.” – Steve Stoloff, CEO of Vavi Sport and Social
“The Mowalla team is extremely organized, efficient and professional. They are great to work with, kept the program on track, and delivered a very smoothly run, high quality production. Quite a feat for a first-year event with over 5500 registered participants!” – Steve Stoloff, CEO of Vavi Sport and Social
Last Call
As stated above by Vavi’s eloquent CEO, the race boasted over 5,500 participants, over-reaching their first year attendance goals. Demand for registration was so great, Vavi had to add additional race start times to the day to accommodate increased crowd interest.
Encore
This is our second event in conjunction with Vavi Sport and Social and hopefully not the last. What started as some simple consulting on their Mud Run event blossomed into a fully-fledged, event driven partnership. We love working with these fine purveyors of SoCal Social and look forward to our future endeavors. On a final note, Team Mowalla wants to say that it was this year’s participants that really made this race. The highlight of our event-day was witnessing all the creativity that went into the costumes on the course- Kudos.
